Ted Harrison
February 24 to April 7
Painter

Ted Harrison is one of Canada's most popular artists. His love of the land and people of the Yukon has brought him national acclaim. His distinctive style of painting is both colourful and sophisticated yet retains an innocent charm, and appeals to young and old alike.

Edward Hardy Harrison was born August 28th, 1926 in the village of Wingate In County Durham, England. Ted attributes his early interest in art to the encouragement and support from his parents, particularly his mother who had an interest in fashion design and photography. Grammar school teachers recognized his talent and urged him to further pursue his artistic dreams by going to Art College. In 1943, he enrolled in Hartlepole College of Art and began to study art and design in earnest, but the Second World War interrupted his education.

Following military service, he returned to art school and in 1950 received a Diploma in Design.

The following year he received a teaching certificate from the University of Durham and began a twenty-eight year career in education. Ted, who had a great interest in travel, then taught in many different parts of the world, including Malaysia, and New Zealand, before immigrating to Canada with his wife Nicky, and their son Charles. They settled in the small town of Carcross just outside Whitehorse, in the Yukon.

In addition to his work as a painter, Ted has written several children's books and illustrated both "The Cremation of Sam McGee" and "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" by Robert Service.

Other projects include his design of Yukon Pavilion for Vancouver Expo' 86 and the design of a Canada Post Christmas Stamp in 1996.

His paintings can be found in private and public collections throughout Canada, and in New Zealand, Japan, Germany and the United States. In 1987 he received the Order of Canada for his contribution to Canadian culture. He was awarded a honorary doctorate from The University of Athabasca in 1991, a honorary doctorate in Fine Arts from The University of Victoria in 1998 and a distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Alberta in 2002. He also holds an honorary doctorate of Law.

In 1993 he moved to Victoria, British Columbia to continue his painting and writing. In 2009, the first ever biography of the artist, "Ted Harrison: Painting Paradise", was written by author, Katherine Gibson. And in the same year Ted donated a large mural entitled "Vast Yukon" measure 19.5 ft. wide by 6 ft. tall to the University of Victoria. The mural is currently on display in the Faculty of Social Science

Jill Louise Campbell presents a solo show of her work entitled: "France a Pilgrimage, India a Blessing"

An Exhibition and sale of 20 original paintings, mixed media, watercolour, gold foil, oil, and fabric. At The Chemainus Theatre Gallery from June 2 to July 12, 2009.

"I walked a 1000 year old Pilgrimage path in France with only a knapsack, notebook and camera. My paintings became my visual journal. Then India beckoned. I soaked in its 1000 year old spiritual traditions and immersed myself in rich Hindu culture, the sacred cities of Varanasi, Haridwar and Rishikesh. In the jewel colours of Rajasthan I camel trekked in a shimmering desert."

Reproductions, canvas giclees and art cards available. Photographs of her inspirations are also represented.

Neil has had a near lifetime interest in photography but mainly as an on and off again hobby. His photographic interests are varied, but he did not have the time to pursue his hobby with any seriousness until the last few years (retirement).

Neil is totally self-taught, picking up skills from personal experience, experimentation and reading. His skills have been added to by his personal appreciation of the wide ranging talents and works of other artists both in traditional forms of art and photography. He takes every opportunity to learn and experiment and he has more recently started to move some of his photography into photographic art.

For over 25 years Jennifer has painted a swath across Canada making a name for herself as an "English County" watercolourist. She mixes pure colours with clear water to capture light and colour in her romantic, impressionistic scenes

Jennifer lives in Duncan on the Cowichan Estuary. She paints commissions from photographs but is happiest painting on location. On summer days, she carts her easel down the lane to a nearby cottage or garden to capture it at the height of its beauty.

Jennifer is the founding organizer of the popular Visions Spring and Fall Tour. Over the last 8 years, this art studio tour has enticed thousands of visitors to the Cowichan Valley.

Michaela Davidson, one of the West Coast's most prominent, award winning artists, lives and works at her Art & Gift Gallery, situated in Lake Cowichan, B.C. She was born in Victoria and educated at the University of Alberta and the Banff School of Fine Arts. During that period, Michaela painted mostly in oils and acrylics, but upon moving back to the West, found the exciting medium of watercolours, perfect for expressing the spirit and movement of the beautiful rolling mists and pristine waterways.

Michaela is also known for her creative work with stained, fused and slumped glass and has produced many windows and art pieces for private and corporate collections.

Her paintings have been said to depict the unique beauty and tranquility of our area and can be found in collections around the world. Her work can be viewed at Michaela Davidson Art & Gift Gallery in Lake Cowichan, 1-888-749-6375 and at Michaela's Art, Framing and Gifts, in the Village Green Mall in Duncan, 250-746-1658.

"My work is landscape based, having to do with our connection to the earth. Whether a piece is a floral study, a landscape or an abstract interpretation, the work reflects my contemplation of the gifts from the land."

Trained as both a painter and a printmaker, the process I find most satisfying is the work with monotypes. The particular technique I work with combines both disciplines, using oil paint and brushes to create the image, plus the challenge of working backwards and not quite knowing what will be revealed when the piece is pulled of the working surface. A sense of adventure is necessary!

For the past nine years my work has focused on depictions of buildings from small towns in Alberta and British Columbia. After contemplating a change of subject for some time. I made the leap back to painting landscapes after moving to Duncan in 2007. This series is the result of spending the past six months in my studio, trying some new techniques and re-learning old ones in order to represent the places I have called home. This exhibit features places with which I have an old familiarity with, such as the skies of southern Alberta and places that I am beginning to discover, such as the blues and greens of the Pacific Coast.

My Artistic Journey began as a Stained Glass Artist in the 70's. I loved the challenge of working with glass and fell in love with color and the design process. This led to painting on silk with French dyes and it was the vibrant bright colors that fascinated me. A move to Texas - Dallas/Forth Worth - led to painting with watercolors and teaching art. I studied with many artists and also at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. I have Signature Member status with SWA in Texas.

A move to Vancouver Island in 2003 led to painting a coastal series. I have been influenced by living on the Straight of Georgia and I am inspired by the seasons - from sunrise to sunset. I am a colourist and love the process of painting. And the journey continues...

My interest in botanical painting and drawing began over 25 years ago when we moved from Toronto to Carlisle, Ontario where the superb soil of our glacial moraine is good for growing practically anything~ particularly flowers. Irises, one of the first flowers I knew as a child, have been a special passion ever since.

Johnny pays tribute to all the great photographers throughout the ages who captured expression and a time with their camera lenses. Thus allowing artists like Johnny to re-interpret the many wonderful faces of our tribal people of yesterday and today. "History lies but faces do not."

He was born and raised in Toronto, where his mother would tell him stories of her First Nations father from the Alberta plains. Johnny's inner voice would always pull him towards this lineage. His illustrating was a form of therapy as a youth retreating inwards from an external world of addiction and violence. An elder once told him: The longest walk you'll ever make is from your head to your heart; stop listening to your head and start listening to your heart. This was the beginning of Johnny's journey.

Barton Leier Gallery Born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, in 1956, Grant Leier studied at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary and the Illustrators workshop in New York, graduating in 1978. Grant and his wife, Nixie Barton, also an artist, live on a farm on Decourcey Drive in Yellow Point where they operate a seasonal gallery in their whimsical garden. Grant is thrilled to have created an exhibition for the Chemainus Theatre, a wonderful venue and so close to home.

Leier was a textiles major at college and it was here that he became fascinated with pattern and decoration. A proficient painter, Leier has had numerous solo exhibitions in Canada and California and has been featured in important group exhibitions in public and private galleries. His work is represented in many corporate and private collections including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Public Archives Canada and Chevron Canada.

Grant feels a need to create intense colour, pattern and a sense of celebration into everything he paints and wants his images to evoke feelings of well being and goodness. Hope you enjoy the show! www.bartonandleiergallery.com

I love oil paint - how it feels to mix it buttery or slick, how the canvas takes it differently from each brush, or from the side of my hand. Luminous and sensual, oil painting has awakened me to colour and revived my love of imagined gesture - the kinaesthetic awareness that comes from gazing at an exquisite line or a perfectly shaded contour. www.susanellenton.com

All great art stems from pain. It is the act of working through something.

My art began as a search, I believe, for my own roots. In 2002 I became ill and sought the counsel of an Elder. It was explained to me that the body becomes sick when we're not doing what we are supposed to be doing.

I have been illustrating professionally since then, and am currently represented by 5 galleries across Canada.

When I illustrate there is an energy flowing through me and I become merely a channel, and a voice, bringing attention to a much larger picture: the genocide of aboriginal people.

It has been prophesized that the time is now, through our generation that we the Indian will rise up. I specialize in First Nations portraits interpreting from still life, imagination, and cropped photos of chiefs, warriors and tribal people of yesterday and today. It is with respect that I credit all the great photographers throughout the ages who preserved time and captured expression through their camera lens.

"My people will sleep for one hundred years, but when they awake, it will be the artists who give them their spirit back."
Lois Riel

Doug was born in 1964 and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His art career began early when he illustrated a children's book at the age of 14. He was accepted at the Alberta College of Art after graduation from high school, but a scholarship for acting drew him to the theatre.

He went on to become one of the founding performers of the Rosebud Dinner Theatre and School of Arts. He acted, directed and taught at Rosebud for 11 years. During that time, Doug starred in two pilot television shows and numerous film and television spots. His art was never far from his mind, however, and he continued this expression through poster and set design and illustration.

Doug's departure from Rosebud opened the doors to new artistic opportunities. In 1998, he was commissioned to do a portrait of hockey legend Guy LaFleur, and the series of graphite drawings that ensued are now displayed in venues throughout North America. As well, Doug expanded his artistic endeavors into the field of graphic design, and in 2001 he was recognized by Alberta New Media for his award-winning web design.

Since 2001, however, Doug has devoted himself full-time to fine art, oil paintings and graphite/charcoal drawings being his preferred mediums. His historic works seek to preserve moments from the native North American Indian way of life and to explore themes of the West. These graphite drawings and oil paintings reflect Doug's passion for authentic detail as well as drama and texture. Doug's contemporary works focus on commissioned portraits and plein-air landscapes.

His paintings are gaining wide attention for an artist still young in his career. Collectors from around the world have bought his works and as a result, his paintings are in collections as far away as Australia and New Zealand and in some of the finest private collections in Canada and the American Southwest. He receives regular invitations to attend prominent exhibitions in Canada and the United States. He also attended the prestigious invitation only 'Artist Ride' in South Dakota in August 2004 and again in 2005 where he was able to stage many scenarios for future paintings. He was thrilled to be working alongside some of the western art genres finest painters, several of whom are part of the Cowboy Artists of America organization. He is represented by Mountain Trails Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming and in Cody, Wyoming.
